JAI MATA JI

Who Is Mataji?

.::Mataji::.

Mataji ( The great Mother Goddess ) is the source of power though eternal and extreme, unborn and absolute; yet she has appeared in many forms and figures as she has taken incarnations many times to help the world in difficult conditions.

It is believed that she was there even before the creation of the universe and she is omnipresent and omnipotent!

Nothing in the whole universe is impossible nor anything would exist without Mataji (shakti). Shakti is the energy that exists within all living human beings, animals, creatures and plants. Not even a leaf could move without the permission of Mataji.

It is her that keeps universe going, the earth going round the sun, The sun spreading radiance and the moon spreading light, the wind serving breeze, the clouds showering rain to trees which give cool shelter and every drop of blood that circulates in our body is due to the force of Mataji.

'The Mother is found everywhere, and in all living beings. The true form of the Divine Mother is Creative Energy, Shakti, which is understood in different ways in different countries and times, but in reality, there is no difference, it is one Creative Power. There is nothing beyond Shakti in this world of action. Every action in the world is accomplished through Shaktii!'

She symbolises the feminine power, When there was chaos in the cosmos she took various forms such as Durga and Kali to Kill the demons and defeat the evil and to save the living beings. Even the Gods of the trinity (Bramma, Vishnu and Shiva) went to her at difficult situations.

‘ Her mysterical and miraculous actions are anonymous and anomolous to understand and unpredictable.Even today in Kali yuga ( new age ) whenever there will be evil and difficult times on the Earth she will come to rescue her devotees in any form.’

Not normal people like us but great rishis and munis (sages) have said this!
We do not know exactly how Mataji looked like but the rishis and munis (sages) which existed during the period such as Markandeya and Sootji witnessed her in her female forms and narrated the 'Markandeya Puran' in which there are some detailed discretion of how Mataji must have looked like. From this artists have come up with many many impressions and created many masterpieces of art Even by looking at her beautifully carved sculptures one cannot predict her beauty. Her sculptures and idols installed in thousands of temples in India and worldwide where thousands of devotees flock to seek her blessings.

She plays in the souls and bodies of Bhuvas (one who becomes possessed by Mataji ) and the hearts of devotees, she looks upon who ever believes in her with love and faith and worships her with the mind body and soul, she talks to those who speak to her, she comes closer to those who call out to her, she appears in front of those who meditate upon her, she installs herself where ever her hymns (bhajans and garbas ) are sung. It is up to us to realise. This can only be obtained when one is free from Kama (love), Krodh (anger), Lobh (proud) and Moha (lust) and who surrenders their life to Mataji.
She is in us - her shakti (energy) is which makes our 5 senses work, therefore one should see her in all living beings and help every living being to seek her blessings.

It is believed that when Mataji came on earth in a female form as Sati (consort of Shiva). When her father Daksha insulted lord Shiva, Sati was so upset that she could not bear it,by her force and energy she blazed her own body into flames. When lord Shiva was carrying her burning corpse taking away from earth, some parts of the fire fell onto the earth, wherever that fire fell that part turned into a Shakti peeth (pilligramage point).

Up until today she has performed many miracles. Wherever there has been a miracle that place has turned into a holy pilgrimage spot.

Thus Mataji is the supreme and immortal Shakti (everlasting power) which was there even before the creation, it is still omnipresent today and will always exist even after the destruction of the universe.

Ya devi sarva bhoothe shu shakti roopena sansthita namastasyaye namastasyaye namastasyaye namo namaha!

This Navratri fast gives fulfillment of all desires. Those who wish for a child they beget a child, those who wish for wealth get wealth. Those who wish for education get education. Those who are sick they get rid of their disease. One is free from all bondage. Women are blessed with a son. Those who do this fast with devotion all sins are cleared and are free from worries and are granted happiness and peace and have complete prosperity.

STORY BEGINS

Once upon a time Sage Naradji went around the world. He went on a pilgrimage from Swargaloka (heaven) to Mrityulok. When he came to Mrityulok he saw people who had different problems and were sorrowful. He saw some people in sorrow due to their son and some crying for wealth.

After going round Mrityulok a thought came in his mind that it was long since he had seen Lord Vrishpathi. Therefore he decided to meet and thus proceeded to the place of Lord Vrishpathi.

Shri Vrishpathi was very happy to see Naradji and inquired from Naradji the reason of his visit to his place and without fear to ask the question he is being bothered with and explain to him his problem. Then Naradji with folded hands prayed and said Oh Maharaj, I have come to you to learn what fruit does one achieve from the fast of the Navratri days. I would like to hear the importance of this fast from you. Then Shri Vrishpathiji said, Navratri fast comes in the month of Chaitra Shukla period from the first to Asthami (eight) days and in Kanwar month in the Shukla period from the first day to Asthami. This Navratri fast achieves the most impossible thing e.g. One who prays for a son gets a son. One prays for wealth gets wealth. One who wishes for education gets education, one who wishes for happiness, gets happiness. One who does this fast is free from disease, if he is suffering from any illness. He is free from all bondage and all obstacles are removed. The sick person lives a happy life free from his disease. The barren woman begets a child.

Remover of all sins doing this fast which feat is not accomplished. The person who does not do this fast is separated from his mother and father. His parents die and he suffers a lot of sorrow and his body becomes diseased and he suffers. He is not able to beget a child. This way he faces many sorrows the one who does not do this fast. Wealth and prosperity desert him and he faces hunger and thirst and roams round the earth and becomes dumb. If any woman does not do this fast, she is separated from her husband and suffers different types of sorrows and troubles. If one who decides to keep the fast and is not able to remain hungry the whole day then he can have one time meal and on that day with his relatives together and hear the story of Navratri fast. O sage, the one who did this great fasts for the first time I am going to narrate to you the story. Narad kindly listen with full attention and care. This way listening to the words of Brahmaji, Vrishpathi said O Brahmin, to bless man who does this fast in our history I am ready to listen attentively and have come to your shelter. Kindly bless me.

Brahmaji said in old times in a beautiful city, there lived a Brahmin named Anath. He was a devout follower of Bhagvathi (Goddess) Durga. Due to his good qualities and Brahmaji’s first creation he begot a beautiful daughter Sumati who had all the qualities and beauty.

This child Sumati grew in her father’s house playing with her friend so fast like the moon growing in the shukla paksha into full bloom. Whenever her father was doing the puja and Homa of Mother Durga she was always present. One day Sumati went with her friends to play and she was absent for the puja of Bhagvati.

The father seeing such negligence of his daughter got angry and said to his daughter. Oh negligent daughter today you have not done Bhagvati Durga’s puja, due to this reason I will get you married to a sick and poor man. Hearing the harsh words of her father Sumati became sad and said to her father. I am your daughter and it is my duty to do as you say. You may do as you wish. You can get me married to a King, leper whoever you wish but my marriage will take place as my destiny. Man has many worries but only that what the Lord desires happen. Whatever a man does so does he reaps the fruits of his action. Because it is man’s duty to do Action (Karma) and God’s duty to give him the fruits of his actions. Like fire sparks same way seeing the fearlessness of his daughter the Brahmin got angrier then. He got his daughter married to a Kusti- leper and said angrily go fast, go fast and reap the fruits of your action. Lets see depending on destiny what you will do. Hearing these bitter words of her father, Sumati thought in her mind how unfortunate she was to get such a husband. This way thinking of her sorrow Sumati along with her husband went into the jungle and with the ferocious animals spent the night with great difficulty. Seeing this poor child in this state Bhagvati due to her previous good deeds came in front of Sumati and said to her O dear Brahmini I am happy with you ask me any boon, I will grant you. This way hearing Goddess Durga’s word the Brahmini inquired who she was who is happy with me, tell me everything and free me your humble servant. Hearing thus from the Brahmini the Devi said, She is Adi – Shakti, and she is Brahma Vidya – Saraswati. When I am pleased I remove the sorrow of human beings and bestow them with happiness. O Brahmini I am happy with your past birth. I am narrating to you; you’re past birth.

Katha Cont'd

In your last birth you were the wife of Nishad (Bhil) hunter and you were a devoted wife. One day your husband Nishad had done robbery. Due to the robbery you both were arrested by the soldiers and put into the prison. They did not give both you and your husband any food to eat. This way during the days of Navratri you neither ate nor drank water for 9 days and thus fasted for Navratri vrat. Due to the fast I am very happy and today I will grant you your wish so tell me what is the boon you want.

In this way hearing the words of Durga the Brahmini said if you are really happy with me then O Mother Durga, I pay obeisance to you. Kindly get rid of my husband’s leprosy. The Devi said during those days of fasting the fruits of one of the days of the fasting your husband will be rid of leprosy and get back a beautiful golden like body. Brahmaji said in this way hearing the words of the Devi this Brahmini was very happy and said seeing her husband without disease is right.

The body of her husband with the blessings of Bhagvati Durga got rid of the disease and became a bright young man whose brilliance outshone the brilliance of the moon. Seeing the beautiful brilliance of her husband and the immense power of the Devi she thought and said,

"Oh Durga you are the remover of obstacles of the three loka and remover of all sorrow, remover of the disease of a sick man, on being happy bestowing vows, destroying the wicked person, you are the mother and father of the entire universe. Oh Ambe, due to my mistake my father got me married to a leper and removed me from the house. Thus removed from there I have been roaming round the earth, it is you who has crossed me over this ocean of trouble. Oh Devi I offer my salutations to you. Please protect me the misfortune".

Brahmaji said Oh Vrishpathi this way Sumati prayed to the Devi. Hearing her prayers and words the Devi was very happy and said to the Brahmini you will have a son named Udalak who will be very intelligent, wealthy, hardworking and brilliant son very soon. The Devi then again told the Brahmini you could again ask for any other boon you wish to ask. Hearing these words of Goddess Durga Sumati said,

"O Goddess Durga if you are happy with me then kindly explain to me the rituals and way to do the Navratri fast and also the fruit one can achieve. Kindly explain in detail to me". Thus hearing these words of the Brahmin, Durga said, O Brahmin I will narrate to you the complete procedure of the rituals of the Navratri fast, which removes all the sins. By hearing this one is free from all the sins and attains Moksha (liberation).

In the month of Ashwin during the shukla period from the very first day till the 9th day one should keep a fast. If whole day fast is not possible then one meal can be eaten during the day. Asking educated and imminent Brahmins Kalash and wheat grains should be installed and everyday water should be poured on that vessel. Making clay figures of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswathi, everyday according to the rituals one should worship and also offer flowers and worship as per rituals. With Bijora flowers one gets beauty, Jaiphul gives brilliance, Amla gives happiness, Banana gives jewelry. In this way with fruits doing the rituals and Havana also with wheat doing the homa one gets wealth. With kheer one gets Moksha, with the flowers of Champa one gets money, leaves gives light and happiness. Amla gives work and banana gives son, lotus gives kingly respect and wealth and happiness. Kheer, ghee, coconut, honey, jowar and til (mustard seed) and fruits with all these one should do homa and one will achieve whatever one desires.

The one performing the fast should with immense devotion pay obeisance to the acharya and for the yagna performance give dakshina. The one who follows the instructions regarding this great fast he gets all the happiness and there is not an iota of doubt that during these nine days all that is given in charity will get fruit in the multitude of crores. Oh Brahmin, the entire fulfilling ritual and fasting should be done in the temple or in the house as per the instruction.

Brahmaji said to Vrishpathi, this way explaining to the Brahmin the procedure of fasting as per the rituals Goddess Durga disappeared.

Those men and women who keep this fast with devotion get in this loka happiness and in the end get Moksha. Oh Vrishpathi, this remover of sorrow fast importance I have told it for you. Hearing these words of Brahmaji, Vrishpathiji became happy and said to Brahmaji. Oh Brahmaji you have blessed me immensely and in the form of nectar explained the importance of the Navratri fast, O Lord other than you, who could explain the importance so beautifully. Hearing these words of Vrishpathi, Brahmaji said O Vrishpathi, the remover of obstacles for all mankinds, this magnificent fast you have asked me you are blessed, Bhagwathi Shakti (power) is bestowed to all people. This MahaDevi (Great Goddess) power who can understand.

Maa Saraswati or Brahmmani or Brahmatani is the mother goddess of practising knowledge and music, the spouse of the creator Lord Brahma. She is the creater of the seven sounds, She is known as the mother goddess that sits upon ones tongue and our voice is the power of this mother goddess. She is seated on a white lotus or a swan dressed in White silk.

She holds a mala ( rosery beads ) on her top left hand, The Vedas) a text of scriptures on her bottom right hand, and is always seen playing the Veena ( instument form of a sitar ).

http://festivals.iloveindia.com/images/sarasvati.jpg

Maa Sarasvati Mantra:

"Yaa Kundendu Tushaara Haaradhavalaa, Yaa Shubhravastraavritha
Yaa Veenavara Dandamanditakara, Yaa Shwetha Padmaasana
Yaa Brahmaachyutha Shankara Prabhritibhir Devaisadaa Vanditha
Saa Maam Paatu Saraswati Bhagavatee Nihshesha Jaadyaapaha"

Meaning: Goddess Saraswati is fair and beautiful like the jasmine-colored moon. Her white garland resembles the icy dew drops. She is decked in pure white attire. A white lotus serves as the throne of Maa Saraswati, on whose arm rests Veena. We pray Maha Saraswati, who is surrounded and respected by the Gods to bestow her blessings on us. May the goddess remove our lethargy and brighten our life with light of knowledge.

Maha Kali is the fiercest form of Shakti or Durga, in the Hindu religion. Goddess Kali is the destroyer of evil. But Kali is also a compassionate mother who loves her sincere children. Kali is usually worshipped by tantriks to achieve "siddhis". Kali is the slayer of ego as well. Maha Kali Mantra forms part of the prayers offered to the goddess. Goddess Kali Mantra or Mantras for Maa Kali are given below:

Navratron Mein Jyot Jagakar, Nishchaye Apna Kar Ke
Moorti Maa Ki Dekh Raha Tha, Prem Mein Aansu Bhar Ke
Pushpon Ki Mala Se Thode, Phool Tabhi The Gir Gaye

Mata Ke Mandir Ko Dekha, Prem Mein Akhiyan Bhar Kar
Boli Maa Se Rahoon Abhaagan, Jaga Na Sun Paaoon
Tera Dwara Chhod Ke Janani, Kiske Dwaare Jaaoon
Peechhe Jab Parchhai Dekhi, Tara Aakar Boli
Koun Ho Tum Ae Sawanli Naari, Kiski Tu Humjoli
Rukaman Boli Bhagya Heen Hoon, Dukhi Hai Mera Jeewan
Bheelon Ke Ghar Gayi Vyaahi, Naam Hai Mera Rukaman
Ek Hai Ichha Mere Ghar Mein, Jagarata Karwaa De
Binti Karti Hoon Main Tum Se, Saare Niyam Bata De
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Maine Maa Se Putra Hai Manga, Ho Jab Poori Vaani
Jagarata Ghar Karwaoongi, Bulwaaoon Har Praani
Phool Batashon Se Bharti Hoon, Behan Mein Teri Jholi
Hoga Jab Jagarata Aaoon, Tara Rani Boli
Namaskaar Kar Maha Jyoti Ko, Rukaman Paai Vidaai
Harijano Ne Khushi Manaai, Rukaman Leeni Vadhaai
Ek Saal Mein Beta Pakar, Janam Diwas Manaaya
Mundan Keena Anand Maana, Dhyaan Ne Maa Ka Aaya
Vachan Bhulaaya Jab Rukaman Ne, Socha Chamunda Ne
Bete Ke Mukh Daane Nikale, Lagi Tabhi Ghabraane
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Haath Jod Kar Sitala Maa Ko, Chawal Mutthi Laayi
Kesar Se Rang Kar Chawal Ko, Koudi Paanch Rakhaai
Laal Vastra Mein Baandh Ke Del Ko, Beta Godi Leena
Shradha Rakh Ke Ghar Se Nikli, Man Mein Sukh Kuchh Deena
Tara Ne Rukaman Ko Dekha, Mahal Se Neeche Aayi
Boli Jagaran Ke Del Le Lo, Shradha Se Main Laayi
Tara Ne Del Rukaman Se Le, Bade Pyaar Se Choome
Aaoongi Main Vachan De Rahi, Daasi Ambe Ki Main
Naai Sunaina Ne Chupke Se, Raja Ko Batlaaya
Rani Tara Ne Del Lekar, Saara Dharam Dubaya
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Chahate Ho Yadi Dharam Bachana, Ushko Naa Jaane Do
Oonch Neech Ke Bhed Ko Samjho, Maryada Rehne Do
Itni Sunkar Baat Harichand, Tabhi Mahal Mein Aaya
Ungli Kaati Le Kataar Se, Teekha Namak Lagayaa
Bola Rani Haath Darad Hai, Neend Nahin Aayegi
Tere Ghutno Par Sar Rakkhoon, Chinta Hat Jaayegi
Tara Rani Khoyi Huyi Thi, Jaage Ki Masti Mein
Sabhi Raaste Band Pade The, Andhakaar Basti Mein
Bijli Kadke Raat Andheri, Rim Jhim Barse Paani
Mata Ne Kyun Lee Hai Pareeksha, Soche Tara Rani
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Udhar Khadi Rukaman Dware Pe, Rasta Dekh Rahi Hai
Kya Aayegi Wachan Nibhaane, Man Mein Soch Rahi Hai
Nidra Roopi Mata Aao, Tara Ne Ye Tera
Neend Aa Gayi Patidev Ko, Allash Mein Moo Phera
Bhakti Mein Shakti Hoti Hai, Bhaav Ye Man Mein Aaya
Saari Vipadaa Taali Maat Ne, Rasta Ushe Dikhaya
Sawaa Laakh Ka Zevar Jag-Mag, Vastra Heere Jade The
Paajeb Sone Ki Damke, Aage Chor Khade The
Ratan Jadit Khadaoon Ruk Gayi, Dekh Chor Ne Roka
Lootenge Hum Tum Ko Naari, Krodh Mein Aake Toka
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Dekh Ke Apne Ko Sankat Mein, Tara Maa Ko Tera
Phat Gaya Pallu Chhooti Khadau, Toot Gaya Sab Ghera
Tara Ka Samaan Gira Jo, Chor Uthane Aaye
Hila Saanp Bichchu Wo Bankar, Dekh Sabhi Ghabraaye
Tara Bhaiy Se Bhaag Rahi, Rukaman Bhahar Khadi Hai
Baithoon Pooja Mein Sang, Ushke Lekar Wachan Adi Hai
Udhar Harichand Raja Jaaga, Rani Ko Ne Paaya
Utha Khadag Haatho Mein Apne, Mahal Se Bahar Aaya
Thodi Der Pehle Ki Saari, Chor Ne Baat Bataai
Udhar Gayi Ik Sundar Naari, Aur Khadaoon Dikhai
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Shanka Kar Ke Raja Pahuncha, Bheelon Ki Nagari Mein
Pairon Ke Chinh Dekhe Ushne, Rani Ke Raste Mein
Dono Behne Gale Mil Rahi, Maa Ki Leela Nyaari
Rukaman Boli Swaagat Rani, Huye Magan Nar-Naari
Aaj Amawas Ki Andhiyaari, Kali Maa Ko Bhave
Ala Bala Sab Door Hai Hoti, Har Koi Naache Gaave
Tara Boli Pitra Manao, Chawal Se Kalash Bhar Do
Brahman Ko Ye Daan Hai Milta, Taka Swaran Ka Dhar Do
Maathe Pe Sindoor Laga Ke, Baqraa Ek Mangaya
Paanch Tarah Se Ushko Kaata, Oopar Waraq Lagaaya
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Tote Tote Ushke Kar Ke, Kali Bhog Lagaaya
Sabse Pehle Dewarani Ko, Kadwaa Wachan Sunaya
Raja Bahar Dekh Raha Tha, Ghatna Ye Chupke Se
Badlaa Loonga Mein Rani Se, Loute Jab Andar Se
Jholi Bharke Tara Rani, Jaise Bahar Aayi
Le Talwaar Harichand Ghoore, Rani Ab Ghabraai
Rani Toone Chhote Ghar Mein, Aake Shaan Girayi
Jholi Khol Dikha De Kya Hai, Laaj Ne Tujhko Aayi
Dhyaan Lagake Maiya Ka, Tara Ne Maangi Duhaai
Kali Maa Ne Bhog Le Liya, Vaishno Chhavi Dikhai
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Lahu Ban Gaya Kesar Dekho, Hadiyaan Bani Makhaane
Giri Chhuhare Bhole Chamke, Sab Kuch Badlaa Maa Ne
Kaali Madira Doodh Ho Gayi, Chambe Haar Ke Chawal
Meetha Pun Ho Gaya Sabhi Mein, Bhar Gaya Sukh Se Anchal
Raja Chakit Hua Jab Dekha, Par Vishwaas Ne Aaya
Maa Ki Shakti Dekhoon Main Bhi, Raja Jagan Rachaaya
Rani Pe Talwaar Uthakar, Bola Tujhko Maaru
Bahut Samaye Se Bhatak Rahi Ho, Ek Waar Mein Taaru
Rani Haath Pakad Kar Boli, Shanka Abhi Mitaaoon
Mata Ka Darbar Hai Saacha, Man Ki Mail Hataaoon
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Tara Boli Mujhko To, Wishwaas Hai Maa Ka Bhaari
Kaato Bete Ko Ghode Sang, Le Ke Haath Kataari
Kabhi Bhi Maa Na Putra Maarti, Maa Ka Amar Hai Nata
Dekh Le Maa Ka Chamatkaar, Ab Kyun Man Mein Pachhtaata
Raja Ne Talwaar Utha Kar, Krodh Mein Tabhi Nihaara
Ghode Aur Bete Ko Jaa Ke, Ek War Mein Maara
Dheeraj Rakh Ke Tara Ne, Taambe Ke Kalash Mangaaye
Maas Daal Kar Un Dono Ka, Dhakkan Bade Rakhaaye
Raja Ne Geeli Lakdi Ko, Chun Ke Wahan Giraaya
Mantra Bol Kar Tara Ne, Phir Agni Ko Pragtaaya
Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki Ye Katha Hai Tara Rani Ki

Rani Ne Ik Lakdi Lekar, Maas Mein Tabhi Ghumaai
Phansi Huyi Ungli Mein Angoothi, Bete Ki Dikhlaai
Soche Raja Jish Bete Ka, Maine Janam Manaya
In Paapi Haathon Ne Mujhse, Kyaa Anyaaye Karaaya
Kate Huye Ghode Ko Dekhein, Baar Baar Pachhtaaye

Nau Deviyan

Vaishno Devi is nestled in the mighty Trikuta mountain 61 kilometers north of Jammu at a height of 5,200 feet above the sea level in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The shrine is visited all through the year, but the path is difficult during the winters due to snowfall.

As the legend goes, more than 700 years ago Vaishno Devi a devotee of Lord Vishnu, used to pray to Lord Rama and had taken vow of celibacy. Bhairon Nath, a tantric (demon-God) tried to behold Her. Making use of his tantric powers, Bhairon Nath was able to see Her going towards the Trikuta mountains and gave chase. It took Bhairon Nath nine months to locate Her, the reason why the cave is known as Garbh Joon. Mata Vaishno Devi blasted an opening at the other end of the cave with Her Trident when the demon-God located Her. On arriving at the Holy Cave at Darbar, she assumed the form of Maha Kali and cut off Bhairon Nath's head which was flung up the mountain by the force of the blow and fell at the place where the Bhairon Temple is now located. The boulder at the mouth of the Holy Cave according to the legend is the petrified torso of Bhairon Nath who was granted divine forgiveness by the benevolent Mata in his dying moments.

The Yatra begins at Katra and pilgrims have to cover 13 km. of terrain on foot to reach the Darbar. One kilometer away from Katra, is a place known as Banganga, where Mata quenched her thirst and at 6 km., the holy cave at Adhkawari. After 6 km. of trekking, the yatries reach Adhkawari, the holy cave where Mata meditated for nine months.

The journey amidst snow capped mountains and sprawling forests arise from within the holy shrine of Maa Vaishno Devi. There is a common faith among the folk that Goddess-Vaishno sends a 'Call' to her devotees and that once a person receives it, wherever he or she is, marches towards the holy shrine of the great Goddess. A supernatural power seems to draw them through the mountain and they climb up those great heights step by step, chanting 'Prem se bolo, Jai Mata Di'. There are images of three deities - The Mahakali, Maa Saraswati and Maha Lakshmi.

Chamunda Devi is a Shakti shrine, situated 10 km west of Palampur, on the Baner River. This colorful shrine has a wrathful form of Durga or Chamunda. The idol in the temple is considered so sacred that it is completely hidden beneath a red cloth. Here Lord shiva is present in the form of death, destruction & dead bodies along with Devi Chamunda. In the temple the devotees can see scenes from the Devi Mahatmya, Ramayan and Mahabharata. On either side of the Devi's image is Hanuman and Bhairo.

Devotees offer prayers, worship and give offerings for their ancestors. It is thought to be sacred to take a dip in Ban Ganga and to read and recite the writings of Shat Chandi. In the old days, people used to offer sacrifices also to the deity. The Goddess Chamunda was enshrined as chief Goddess with the title of Rudra in the battle between demon Jalandhra and Lord Shiva which made this place famous as "Rudra Chamunda".

Naina Devi - According to legends, Sati or Parvati was the daughter of Prajapati Daksha and later, became the consort of Lord Shiva. Once her father insulted Lord Shiva and unable to accept this, she killed herself. When Lord Shiva heard of his wife's death his rage knew no bounds and holding Sati's body he began stalking the three worlds. The other gods trembled before his wrath and appealed to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu let fly a volley of arrows which struck Sati's body and severed it to pieces. At the places where the pieces fell, the fifty-one sacred 'shaktipeeths' came into being. It is believed that Sati's eyes fell at the place where this temple is situated. Therefore, this temple is called Naina Devi.

The word Naina is synonymous with Sati's eyes. Since then, devotees started visiting this temple. Once the devotee reaches the hill top, prasad can be bought from any of the various shops or it can also one's own offerings from home. After crossing the main gate, there is a big Peepal tree on the left side. On the right side of the temple there are idols of Lord Hanuman Ji and Ganesh Ji. After reaching the main entrance of the temple, there are two statues of lions.

Inside the temple, devotees have darshan of three deities. On the extreme left is Mata Kali Devi, the centre representing two Netras or eyes is Maa Naina Devi and to right side is idol of Lord Ganesh.

Mansa Devi (who fulfills the desires)

Mansa means desire and Meri Maiya who fulfills the desire of HER devotees, is popularly known as Mansa Devi.

Located a top the Shivalik-Hills near Hardwar the Mandir is easily accessible through Ropeway Trolley, as well as stairs and pedestrian path

The Main - idol, enshrined in the Mandir, consists of 5 heads (faces) and three arms of Meri Maiya. Pilgrims tie-up a thread around stem of an old tree for the fulfillment of their desires. One can easily see hundred of knots around it.

Chintpurni Maa

"Chinta" Means worry ……Tension or worries act as a slow Poison.
Maiya saves HER bhakts from it, giving elixir of life, by fulfilling their desires and hence rightly known as CHINTAPURNI. The sacred place belong to 'Chhinnmastika Devi ' i.e. the goddess without head.

It is also know as the Abode of Chhinnamastila. But the most popular name is CHINTAPURANI, Some parts of the holy feet of Sati are said to be fallen here, while Lord Vishnu used His Sudarshan Chakra to cut the corpse into pieces. The Shrine of Chintapurniis situated in Una district of Himachal Pradesh in northern India

Kalika Devi (A Symbol of death and destruction)

Kali is derived from the word Kaala which stands for two meanings - 1. time or age 2. darkness. It is believed that there was a state of total darkness before the origin of Universe; no life existed anywhere! Total Chaos! The age of death and destruction! Kali Maa is another roop (form) of Durga Maa. She was created by Durga Maa to help in the fight against demons. She is the ferocious aspect of Durga.

According to the Puranas, this image of Durga as Kali, so widely worshipped in eastern parts of India, owes its origin to the battle of Durga with Shumbha and Nishumbha. She is also known as the slayer of the demon Raktavija by drinking the drops of his blood and not allowing them to fall on the ground.

Actually, death is the cause of a new life and destruction is the cause of a new shape. This energy is represented as Meri Maiya Kalika. SHE produces the netherworlds and destroys them, to HER desire or will

Vajreshwari Devi " The Goddess of Power "
Popularly known as Kangrewali Mata this seat of deity is powerful, so much so, as to conquer the enemy. Vajra means thunderbolt and Meri Maiya, who bears it is known as Vajreshwari Devi

Jwala Devi
(who represents the energy of fire)
Nine Sacred - Flames, continuously burning without any fuel,or assistance may be seen erupting from a rock-side, now housed in the shape of a Mandir, here. This miracle of nature is worshipped as Meri Maiya known as JWALAMUKHI.

Shakumbhari Devi
(A Symbol of Botanical Energy)

Katha tells us that Meri Maiya helped the living creatures to survive only upon plants and vegetables, when no water was available on this earth, for full long hundred years. Hence, SHE was known as SHAKUMBHARI DEVI i.e. Meri Maiya who feeded upon vegetables.

Stating in terms of botanical-science, there exists a form of energy behind the growth of plants and vegetables; the evolution of this energy is caused due to the multiplication and compounding of atoms. The same energy has been worshipped as Meri Maiya SHAKUMBHARI in Katha

Here, Meri Maiya is represented by four idols. Bhramari and Bhima Devi are enshrined on the right side of SHAKUMBHARI DEVI is also known as Sheetla Devi. Actually all these names signify the same deity, who incarnated HERSELF with the different names in different ages.

In present context also, this aspect of worship is utmost relevant, because the world began to think about the importance of plants and trees only a few years ago, whereas, the Indian Culture had adopted the same thousand of years before, when the worship of SHAKUMBHARI DEVI was started.

This temple is situated at a distance of forty kilometres from Saharanpur ( a city in Utter Pradesh which is biggest state of India ) city in the Shivalik mountian range.

IT is a ritual that aims to put the girl child in a pious position. The Kanchak ceremony that is celebrated during the nine days of Navratri, worships women in the form of Amba or Durga or Mata Rani. In this Punjabi tradition, the girl child is worshipped as the Kanchaka— the divine virgin.

“On the eighth day or Ashtami, devotees break their fasts by calling young girls home, who are then treated to a ritual where they are regarded as the goddess herself. We call them Kanchak devis”. The ritual is based on the belief that Durga mata resides in these young girls; so inviting them home and worshipping them is equivalent to worshipping the goddess in person.

While homes fill with the chatter of giggling adolescent girls, who bask in the attention and savour the goodies they are treated to, the ceremony demands a minimum of atleast five girls to be present for the pooja to be conducted.

Once at the doorstep, the man of the house, either father or son, washes the feet of these girls in order to welcome them inside. “The girls are also given puri, halwa and channa. Adding to this, we also gift them a small token, which is kept on the plate itself,” says homemaker Swarnlata Mehta. From bindis and bangles to hair clips, ribbons and earrings, these kanchakas get to take home a treasure trove.

Incidentally most of things that the girls receive as a part of the pooja bear a significance. For instance, the money, known as shagun or the chunni is a sign of auspiciousness. “The pooja also involves the tying of a sacred thread called the mauli on the right wrist of the girls. The special red chunni usually takes form of an embellished red cloth intricately decorated with golden thread. Some people even offer the girls bangles,” informs Gulliani, elaborating further that all things that the goddess loves are offered to these young girls.

One of the most beautiful parts of the ritual, is the devi poojan, where the young maidens are asked to light a unique diya, specially made from kneaded flour.

(SPI)ritually speaking
Kanchak occurs in the Hindu calender on the eighth day or Ashtami. Little girls known as Kancak Devis are invited home, as they signify the entry of the goddess into the homes of those who invite them. Washing their feet with milk and water, making them a lunch of halwa-puri and kala-chana, and giving them knick-knacks like bangles and earrings, along with a red chunni and some money as shagun, forms the core of the ceremony. This tradition is native to North India.

Jai maa vesheno devi ji ke sabhi navratari ke shubkamnayai maa sab ke rasha karai

Navratri

Navratri, the festival of nights, lasts for 9 days with three days each devoted to worship of Ma Durga, the Goddess of Valor, Ma Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Ma Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge. During the nine days of Navratri, feasting and fasting take precedence over all normal daily activities amongst the Hindus. Evenings give rise to the religious dances in order to worhip Goddess Durga Maa.

1st - 3rd day of Navratri
On the first day of the Navaratras, a small bed of mud is prepared in the puja room of the house and barley seeds are sown on it. On the tenth day, the shoots are about 3 - 5 inches in length. After the puja, these seedlings are pulled out and given to devotees as a blessing from god. These initial days are dedicated to Durga Maa, the Goddess of power and energy. Her various manifestations, Kumari, Parvati and Kali are all worshipped during these days. They represent the three different classes of womanhood that include the child, the young girl and the mature woman.

4th - 6th day of Navratri
During these days, Lakshmi Maa, the Goddess of peace and prosperity is worshipped. On the fifth day which is known as Lalita Panchami, it is traditional, to gather and display all literature available in the house, light a lamp or 'diya' to invoke Saraswati Maa, the Goddess of knowledge and art.

7th - 8th day of Navratri
These final days belong to Saraswati Maa who is worshipped to acquire the spiritual knowledge. This in turn will free us from all earthly bondage. But on the 8th day of this colourful festival, yagna (holy fire) is performed. Ghee (clarified butter), kheer (rice pudding) and sesame seeds form the holy offering to Goddess Durga Maa.

Mahanavami
The festival of Navratri culminates in Mahanavami. On this day Kanya Puja is performed. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped. Their feet are washed as a mark of respect for the Goddess and then they are offered new clothes as gifts by the worshiper. This ritual is performed in most parts of the country.

Meri Maiya Durga is worshipped in different forms. SHE is a form of "Shakti". The evolution of Shri Maha Saraswati, Shri Maha Laxmi and Shri Mahakali (the 3 main forms of "Shakti") took place from Shri Brahma, Shri Vishnu and Shri Mahesh respectively. Each of these 3 deities gave rise to 3 more forms and hence in all, these 9 forms together are known as Nav-Durga .....
1. Meri Maiya Shailputri ..... Meri Maiya Navratri commences with the 1st night devoted to the puja of Meri Maiya Shailputri. Shail means mountains; Parvati, the daughter of king of Mountains Himavan, is known as "Shailputri". HER 2 hands, display a trident and a lotus. SHE is mounted upon a bull.

2. Meri Maiya Bhramcharni ..... One hand holds a "Kumbha" or water port and the other rosary. SHE personifies love and loyalty. Meri Maiya Bhramcharni is store-house of knowledge and wisdom. Rudraksha is HER most adorned ornament.

3. Meri Maiya Chandraghanta ..... Worshipped on the 3rd night this Meri Maiya Durga Shakti is astride a tiger, displays a golden hue to HER skin, possesses ten hands and 3 eyes. Eight of HER hands display weapons while the remaining two are respectively in the mudras of gestures of boon giving and stopping harm. Chandra + Ghanta, meaning supreme bliss and knowledge, showering peace and serenity, like cool breeze in a moonlit night. Meri Maiya is worshipped in this form in Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu) India.

4. Meri Maiya Kushmanda ..... The 4th night begins the worship of Meri Maiya Kushmanda, possessed of eight arms, holding weapons and a mala or rosary. HER mount is a tiger and SHE emanates a solar like aura. "Kumbh Bhand" means to see cosmic vivacity in Pindi shape or knowledge of cosmic intricacies in human race. The abode of Meri Maiya Kushmanda is in Bhimaparvat.

5. Meri Maiya Skandmata ..... Using a lion as a vehicle SHE holds HER son, SKAND in HER lap while displaying 3 eyes and 4 hands; two hands hold lotuses while the other 2 hands respectively display defending and granting gestures. Its said, by the mercy of Meri Maiya Skandmata, even the idiot becomes an ocean of knowledge. The great and legendary Sanskrit Scholar Kalidas created his two masterpieces works viz. "Raghuvansh Maha Kavya" and "Meghdoot" by the grace of Meri Maiya Skandmata.

6. Meri Maiya Kaatyayani ..... As mother, Meri Maiya Kaatyayani stayed in the Ashram of sage Katyayan for penance, hence SHE named as Kaatyayani. This 6th Shakti is also astride a lion with 3 eyes and 4 arms. One left hand holds a weapon and the other a lotus. The other 2 hands respectively display defending and granting gestures. HER complexion is golden coloured.

7. Meri Maiya Kaalratri ..... Black skin with bountiful hair and 4 hands, 2 clutching a cleaver and a torch, while the remaining 2 are in the mudras of "giving" and "protecting". HER vahana is a faithful donkey. The destroyer of darkness and ignorance, Meri Maiya Kaalratri is the seventh form of Nav-Durga meaning scourer of darkness; enemy of darkness. Meri Maiya Kaalratri's famous shrine is in Calcutta, India

8. Meri Maiya Mahagauri ..... Four arms with the fairest complexion of all the Durga Shaktis. Peace and compassion radiate from HER being and SHE is often dressed in a white or green sari. SHE holds a drum and a trident and is often depicted riding a bull. Meri Maiya Mahagauri can be seen in a temple at Kankhal near pilgrim centre Haridwar, India

9. Meri Maiya Siddhiratri ..... Ensconced upon a lotus, most commonly, with 4 arms, and is the possessor of 26 different wishes to grant HER bhakts. Meri Maiya Siddhiratri's famous pilgrim centre, is located in Nanda Parvat in the Himalayas.

In present context also, this aspect of worship is utmost relevant, because the world began to think about the importance of plants and trees only a few years ago, whereas, the Indian Culture had adopted the same thousand of years before, when the worship of SHAKUMBHARI DEVI was started

darshan ki mann mein laagi lagan hain
chintan mein har saans ab toh magan hain - 2
main na rukungi raste mein ek pal
dhun hai yeh mujhpe sanwaar
mohe jaana hai maiyya ke dwaar
main jaaungi maata ke dwaar
mohe jaana hai maiyya ke dwaar
main jaaungi maata ke dwaar
na chhithi aayi na aaya bulawa

shradhha suman mein arpan karungi
bhakti ka sachha dhan maang lungi

Navratri Pooja Thali

In order to accumulate the entire Pooja material, it is always better to arrange all the little things required during Pooja into a Pooja Thali. This may consist of things like roli, vermilion, flowers, sacred water, bhog materials like dry fruits and sweets etc. Generally people decorate this Thali in a very artistic manner in order to give more aesthetic look to the pooja. So, once you have arranged all the Pooja items, you simply need to arrange it in a beautiful Thali. The decoration of Thali is not a tedious task either. All you need to do is simply decide what kind of thali you are looking for. Silver, brass or a steel thali, any of them is perfectly fine. You can decorate the Pooja thali by using beautiful clothes, gulal powder or flowers.
Navaratri Vrat Thali

A Vrat Thali is basically the thali that includes of food items for the devotees who observe fast. As, during the fast, it is compulsory to eat only satvik food, there are limited options available for the fast-observers. However, now days, cookery experts have come up with extremely scrumptious recipes out of these limited options. Even in hotels, there is a specific satvik thali available by the name of Navratri Vrat Thali which consists of special food for the people on fast. A Vrat Thali may consist of items like Aloo Sabudane Ki Tikki, Palak Paneer, Sookhi Arbi, Dahi Pudine Wale Aloo, Makhane Ki Sabzi, Shakarkandi Ki Chaat, Pudina Raita, Aloo Papad, Sago Papad, Sawank Ke Chawal, Kuttu Ki Poori among others. You can thus also prepare the satvik thali or Navratri thali as per you own choice.

Maa Sarasvati Mantra:

"Yaa Kundendu Tushaara Haaradhavalaa, Yaa Shubhravastraavritha
Yaa Veenavara Dandamanditakara, Yaa Shwetha Padmaasana
Yaa Brahmaachyutha Shankara Prabhritibhir Devaisadaa Vanditha
Saa Maam Paatu Saraswati Bhagavatee Nihshesha Jaadyaapaha"

Meaning: Goddess Saraswati is fair and beautiful like the jasmine-colored moon. Her white garland resembles the icy dew drops. She is decked in pure white attire. A white lotus serves as the throne of Maa Saraswati, on whose arm rests Veena. We pray Maha Saraswati, who is surrounded and respected by the Gods to bestow her blessings on us. May the goddess remove our lethargy and brighten our life with light of knowledge.
